Changes to the Circulatory System Caused by Aging With age, blood vessels, especially the arteries become more rigid and lose their elasticity. This means that the heart has to work harder to pump the blood against increased resistance, and in time as an adverse reaction the heart muscles become thicker and less efficient. The two readings that make a blood pressure measurement, the systolic and the diastolic evolve in opposite directions with age, the first increases, while the second gets lower. This is simple to explain if you consider the way the sphygmomanometer, the device used to measure blood measure, works. When the heart contracts, it has to push the blood harder to pump it through the stiff arteries pinched shut by the inflated cuff of the sphygmomanometer. When the diastolic phase takes place, because the reduced pliability of the blood vessels means they require longer to relax and allow the blood to resume normal flow, so the value of the reading is smaller. The gap between the two values, if considerable larger than the normal, is a clear indications of arterial health issues. The wider the difference, the more caution you should take with monitoring your blood pressure.
