Comparison - The EmWave Personal Stress Reliever | The RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device

On the other hand, the RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device uses a slightly different method to help you control your breathing. Instead of winking LED lights and the thumb or ear sensors, the RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device detects your pulse through a sensor belt and communicates musical tones through the supplied lightweight headphones.  The pattern of the tones indicates when to breath in and out and additionally, also are calming and soothing.

The RESPeRATE sensor belt is worn around either your chest or waist and will then detect your heart rate and pulse. The headphones are worn at the same time. The machine will then start to play two very distinct musical tones. The first tone signals when you should breathe in and the second: when to breathe out.

The machine increases the duration of the tones until you are taking only about 10 breaths a minute - which is a very calm and relaxing breathing level. Once you reach this rate of breathing, you should feel much more relaxed, the result of which is reduced stress and lowered blood pressure.

Construction

It could be said that both devices employ electronic wizardry, painstakingly developed, by the respective manufacturers: RESPeRATE and The Institute of Heartmath.  We actually own our own RESPeRATE and it is fair to say that it is probably more substantial in its construction that the emWave.  However, the only way to tell whether this is a significant issue would be to test each of the devices to destruction by dropping and knocking etc., something we not unreasonably are not prepared to do.  They should be treated with the care and attention any electronic device deserves in which case, both pieces of equipment should provide long service for their owners.

 Our Recommendation

Because both of these machines are effective in helping to slow breathing and reduce blood pressure and stress levels, choosing one over the other is rather difficult. Even so, a verdict must be provided..

If the $250 - $300 price of the RESPeRATE device is within budget, then you will probably find it sligfhtly easier and more convenient to use. There is also the small question mark over the construction.  However and it is quite a large "however, the emWave is marketed by the manufacturer, Heartmath, at only $199 and even less if you shop around a little, so if a saving of $100 or more is required, you can still purchase a highly effective device in the emWave.

Much research has gone into the production of both devices and my feeling is that whichever you choose, the desired results are achievable. It is down to personal preference and budget.
