Choosing A Home Blood Pressure Monitor

Checking your blood pressure for yourself instead of making the trip to your doctor or clinic is a simple matter that will save you lots of time and you can achieve this so easily, by using your own automatic blood pressure monitor. When you start looking, you are going to be faced with a huge variety of blood pressure monitors from which to choose, so apart from a salesman with a vested interest, where do you go for help? This article will offer a couple of tips that will make your choice easier.

Top of the list of features has to be accuracy and not just that.  It must be consistently accurate; not just most of the time! A good way to start is by reading reviews of the monitors that appeal to you, make some notes and then you can hopefully come to a decision. You could ask your doctor or your pharmacist to recommend a brand and a model with good accuracy, since it is probable that they have experience with such devices but it is doubtful that they will be as up-to-date as you will be after you have studied the market for yourself; at least not for Omron Blood Pressure Monitorthe short time that you will be looking. You might even become an expert….for a day or two anyways!  If your doctor were to recommend the machine he or she is using currently, the chances are that model is no longer on the market.  It’s not as if they buy one every few weeks! A pharmacist on the other hand may well be motivated as much by commercial factors as giving unbiased advise.  They are after all in business to make money! So best advice is: look for yourself. Cost must be a relevant factor but don’t lose sight of the fact that it is your health with which you are dealing so economizing may be a bad idea.  There’s no harm in comparing prices and value for money.

Essential features
Despite what advertisements on television and in magazines might say, there is no such thing as “the best digital blood pressure monitor”. Different home blood pressure monitors will fit the needs of different people; therefore you should consider how you're going to use your monitor before choosing one. For example, if you're always on the road you might like a compact device that you can pack easily.

A most important component of a digital blood pressure monitor is the cuff. The two most found cuff fittings come either on the upper arm blood pressure monitor or the writs blood pressure monitors and whereas the standard Lifesource Monitorscuff sizes are obviously designed to suit the majority of people, if there is a choice of cuff sizes, you need to consider this aspect.  It may well be that you have to choose from a range that does offer different cuff fittings if for example, you have particularly large arms.  The monitor is far more likely to give inaccurate or inconsistent readings if the cuff fits badly. You should also look for a cuff that is easy to put on by yourself and this is often specified on the box.

A number of digital blood pressure monitors have extra functions such as monitoring the heart pulse; memory for previous readings; provision for two or more users with separate memories for each; provision of an integral printer; and even a download facility to transfer the results to your PC.

A fundamental feature that many will miss and feel daft afterwards but something with which many will instantly agree, is the size of the display on the digital blood pressure monitor. It's a no-brainer really but you'd be surprised how many people buy their kit and then find they can't read the writing.  Nobody's exempt.  My wife recently bought herself a spare watch whilst her regualr one was being repaired, only to find she couldn't read the time without her reading glasses!

If you are elderly or simply have vision issues or are easily confused by numerals, a large display with clear large numbers is a prioity requirement.
